#Self-Awareness

"Never be afraid to try something new because life gets boring when you stay within the limits of what you already know"

Every January 1st, the same exact thing happens in our house; the 3 of us take turns listing changes or goals that we are going to spend the new year working toward in an effort to make our lives better.
I can list countless resolutions that have been broken time and time again because of my lack of self-control, my intentional disobedience and overall lack of caring for the most part.  I find that my lack of self-awareness is the biggest reason for my constant resolution failures. I don't know who I am or what I want in this life.  It has never been for lack of trying on my part, because I have read the self help books, looked at the blogs online, tried to eat, pray & love my way around the world to find myself, but could only afford the eating part and I didn't leave the country. Another fail.
A wise man once told me that I would never be content in myself or find fulfillment until I truly found myself. I took his words to heart and then began the journey into self-awareness. I learned early on though that full self-awareness requires me to be honest with myself in every aspect of my life and well, let's face it, how many of us are completely honest with ourselves?
I always thought that I knew myself on an intimate level, until some really hard things transpired and I found myself in a foreign space, looking in the mirror and not recognizing the reflection. It is a scary place to be in when questions arise from your actions and you are faced with the knowledge that you have no idea who you are or what you are capable of.
So what are you most afraid of?

Joy

Do you honestly know who you are, inside & out?
It took me a long time to find myself and again actually like who I saw in the mirror.
Please do not misunderstand, I am not talking about the physical reflection that everyone sees from the outside but our soul, our heart, the feelings that we have that make up our DNA.

June 19, 2015 Disney Studios released a movie called Inside Out.
Starring: Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling & Phyllis Smith.
It is about a little girl named Riley, who is uprooted from her life when her dad gets a job half way across the United States. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions: Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and sadness.  The emotions are the control center in her mind, trying to help her navigate the everyday as best as they know how,  to adjust to her new life in California. The movie was #3rd best in 2015 and for very good reason.
People related so intimately to this well written movie because it spoke truth in many of us about how we live our lives and the full, honest extent our emotions play in it.
Sadness

It made me cry....a lot.
I cried because it made me look at myself so honestly.
Anger

Every day, no matter what lies ahead of me, I start with Joy. She is something that I cannot live without. I can feel her as I open the curtains and see the sunshine, or I can see her as Gracie & Chloe wag their tails and make their way to love on me. She  works very hard to have control of ever other emotion in me, but sadly, many times she loses. Why all of the internal chaos?
Did you know that around the age of two, children start rapidly developing a vocabulary for their feelings (1. Daniels). It is important to teach children emotional intelligence skills at an early age, so they have the necessary tools to manage the emotional ups & downs of everyday life.
Fear
Every emotion effects us in some way, shape or form.
Disgust
Navigating our emotions and learning what makes them run is in knowing ourselves. It is knowing ourselves inside out.
It is impossible to live a life of fulfillment and happiness without knowing who we are.

Knowing who you are is the foundation of everything else. It is very important that we are comfortable with ourselves and that means knowing who were are, inside & out!

Who are you? Do you like yourself?
Do you want to find out what brings you joy, what makes you cry, or discover things that you never knew you had inside of you?
Come and join me as I start a 30 days of self-awareness journey. Today is all about the following questions that start with I.  Some may be simple and quick to answer and others may take looking deep into yourself. Grab your paper & go!
