My Grandma's life, love & her fabulous Sugar Cookies
Everyone that ever met my grandma, Betty Dunkin, loved her.
I can say without any doubt that this is not my opinion, but a fact.
She was an amazing woman that spent her lifetime from her late teens to her death, devoted to her family. I am so lucky that I am part of that family that she helped to build. She married my grandpa, Bob, at a young age, but was faithful to him through their 58 years of marriage. She was a homemaker that raised 5 kids, Retta, Joyce, Bob, Brenda(my mom) and Jack, and took care of her live in mother-in-law.(God bless her)
She was a fantastic cook and baker, she sewed everything and quilted beautiful blankets and through it all, she always had time for God. She made him her priority in life, and it always showed through in everything that she did. She had a huge heart.
All of my family memories growing up involve her and my grandpa. Happy times, Godly times, so much laughter and family love.
I feel very lucky as a mom that Katie had a close relationship with her. Katie was only 4 years old when we moved here to Iowa and she instantly bonded with her.
It took just 7 minutes from our house to theirs and the trip was made often. Their house was always a welcome place and our spot for most all of our family gatherings. I can close my eyes and picture the house, everything in it and the smells that still linger in my mind. I don't know a lot of kids that get a relationship with their great grandparents and I feel so blessed that Katie got those years with them both. Katie moved in with her when my grandpa passed away in March 2012 and helped to take care of her. Their bond grew so much closer that Katie continued to help her through the struggles and changes that come with grief. It was so hard on Katie when she passed away on January 7, 2013.
I am lucky that I got some of her qualities with the ability to cook and bake good food!
I have a lot of her recipes that she would make and one of her favorites of mine is her sugar cookie recipe that is from her mom, my great grandma Ewing. There are many things that I hold onto from her and the gift to bake amazing things for my family is a constant reminder of her. I miss her everyday, but all of the years that I got to spend with her and love her have provided me with memories to continue to move on. I know too that because of her faith in Jesus Christ, that when I leave this world, I will see her sweet face again and get to hug her for real instead of just in my dreams!

Proverbs 31:10-31English Standard Version (ESV)
An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. She considers a field and buys it;
with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle.
She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet. She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple. Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers sashes to the merchant. Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.
She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
