A Pit, Suicide and Hope in Jesus
Suicide is the third leading cause of death for girls ages 15-24. (Stats from Lies Young Women Believe) These last 2 years, we, as a community in the Quad Cities, have been faced with the highest amount of suicides in the high school students that they have ever seen.
It has been so heartbreaking to see the lost faces and brokenness of the families that have had to bury their children.
I have always wondered what the young girls were thinking right before they tightened the rope or before they took the entire bottle of pills that stopped their young hearts from beating.
What is so hopeless in this world that it cannot be fixed?
Why are they so desperate in their actions and feel that nothing else is ever going to be okay?
The studies and articles that I have read, talk about cyber bullying and the fact that the youth today do not know how to unplug from the social world around them. we are equipping the youngest of kids with adult technology. They have access to every social media outlet and are plugged in 24/7. When they leave school, everything that happened that day follows them home. They find themselves much braver when talking to others online, than they ever would be in public or face to face with their peers. Kids can say the harshest things to each other and cyber bullying has now skyrocketed to an all time high. Kids have still not realized how much words hurt.
When I was in junior high, I was one of those kids that did not care about running my mouth about kids that were not like me. I was a bully in the sense that I didn't stop anyone that made fun of others and I am sure that I also gave my moneys worth when it came to making fun of others.
There was a particular kid in junior high that we made fun of often. he was less fortunate than myself, my friends, and most of the other kids that played their hand in calling him names, and making fun of him. Some kids never learn how much their negative words hurt.
I had to learn the hard way.
I learned the toughest lesson when I watched the Coroner and the Police Department pull that kid's body from the Mississippi river. The same kid that I had sat back and watched be teased. He jumped from the bridge when we were in junior high school because of many issues, but one of them was because he was bullied at school. That is an image that never leaves your memory. This is something that I had to get on my knees and ask God to forgive me for. As a young, ignorant teenage girl, I had no idea how much ugly words could hurt someone. If I could take any of those times back in my junior high life, I would. bullying someone stays with you for the rest of your life, even when you ask for forgiveness.
The actions of us, bled into him, and it changed his families life forever.
Suicide changes the lives of everyone.
It has changed the lives of the family & friends of the kids from Central, Assumption, West and Pleasant Valley High Schools that decided there was no hope and ended their lives.
Katie and I had the privilege of leading a bible study together in the summer of 2013.

One important thing that we learned is HOPE.
If you are struggling with thoughts of suicide
1. Cry out to the Lord
2. Talk to your parents, pastor or someone in your life that you trust
3. Talk with someone live @ www.TeenHopeLine.com or call 1-800-394-4673

Dictionary. com defines a LIE as a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive: An intentional untruth
Do not fall into the pit of despair and believe the lies that Satan fills your head with. He is the master manipulator. We can go back to the very beginning of time and see that he was deceiving from day one when he went into the Garden of Eden with Adam & Eve and lied to Eve. He convinced her to eat the fruit from the tree that God had specifically told her to stay away from.
God tells us over and over again that we are to stay away from Satan and his lies. Unfortunately, many of us stand with our feet straddling the line in the sand with half wanting to be with God and half with being in the world.
We need to find the hope that is the truth of Jesus Christ.
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life." John 14:6
We need to know in this uncertain world, that God is enough. We all have struggles in this life, but we must be able to realize, especially at a young age, that there is hope with Jesus that goes way beyond this earthly life.
If you know of anyone that is struggling with depression or hopelessness, stand up, help them, or find them help. Don't be a part of what I was and cower with the bullies.
Don't learn this lesson the hard way and know that ugly words, hurt!
